According to DSI Director Lisa Nakamura, today's "cancel culture" is a quickly expanding phenomenon during the pandemic. According to CBS News, "cancel culture" often refers to public withdrawal of support, or sometimes more directly, silencing something or somebody.

Lisa told CBS News that because of the pandemic, "canceling" might be happening even more often these days, bringing wider attention to the phenomenon. "Before, I don't think it was seen as necessarily pervasive… it was just the internet being the internet," she said. "But I really believe that post-COVID, everyone's on the internet so much that they're having to revise how important it is what you say online because no one's doing anything else."
